Tracking the Micropollutants - in Dülmen

Dülmen is a town with about 47.000 residents in North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the Münsterland, right in between the city of Münster and the Ruhr area.

The town is more rural than urban, consists mainly of residential areas and has virtually no industry. The town is located in the Lippe catchment and is therefore in the area of the regional public water board Lippeverband, responsible for the municipal waste water treatment plant. This facility drains into the Tiberbach direction Hullerner/Halterner Stausee - important water reservoirs for the Ruhr area and indisputable suppliers of drinking water of superior quality.

Dülmen will host a project unique in Europe: From 2013 to 2015 the citizens, the health sector and politicians shall be informed and sensitized regarding the consequences of conventional consumption of pharmaceuticals for the water chain and how an altered use of medication may have positive impacts onto the environment.

The waste water treatment plant of the water board Lippeverband is technically state of the art, but even those facilities cannot eliminate most of the micropollutants at present. There are no threshold values for pharmaceutical residues from these municipal waste water treatment plants, because there is no environmental risk expected from the facilities.

Nevertheless, the wide range of micropollutants entering into the waste water is a reason for concern: How much of this is entering unnecessarily into the waste water treatment plant and subsequently passes into water bodies?

The Lippeverband, supported by the government of the federal state of NRW, the EU, the municipality of Dülmen and a wide range of scientific supporters, is consequently analyzing and addressing consumers‘ consumption and behaviour and will in parallel install technical improvements and carry out research programs at the waste water treatment plant.

On 15th April 2013 the kick-off meeting of the pilot project took place. More about the meeting.

The final event of the pilot project took place on August 14th 2015. More about the meeting.
